The Medical Mathematic Tutorial for Student Nurses is based on Kee and Hayes (2005) as it is the required text for the Technical College of the Lowcountry, nursing pharmacology course, NUR 105.

The tutorial is set up using frames.  The top frame is the heading for the tutorial.  The left frame contains the menu which provides important links to the main lessons, learning activities, and self assessments for ease of use. The main frame will display all pages of the tutorial.  The bottom frame provides a continuous link to contact the author for comments and questions.

There are five main sections of the tutorial a Welcome Page, Conversions, Tools of the Trade, Formulas, Assessment and Survey.  The learning module is organized to present the main lesson first, then a learning activity, and ends with a self assessment.

The Welcome Page introduces the tutorial, provides instructions, lists the goal and learning outcomes and provides a link to the author’s biography.

The Mastery of Conversions lesson includes instruction on metric measures, apothecary measures and household measures.  An interactive SmartMate flash card learning activity is available to assist you to memorize basic measurements.  The flash card utilizes micromedia flash.  If you have a pop up blocker you will need to allow popups for this learning activity.  There are flash card activities for metric measures, apothecary measures, household measures, metric to apothecary conversion, apothecary to household measures and metric to household conversions.   The learning module ends with a practice skill assessment.

The Tools of the Trade lesson uses pictures to present tools to measure and administer medications, a practical application session based learning activity and ends with a practice skill assessment.

The Using Formulas lesson provides direct instruction of how to use mathematical formulas to solve medical dosage problems.  The basic formula and the ratio and proportion formula are presented in step by step detail to assist you to calculate drug doses, with a focus on making conversions, if necessary, before using the mathematical medical formulas.  The learning activity will have you  identify the available drug on hand (H), the drug form (V), the desired dose (D) and the unknown (X) from a word problem.  A pop up display will verify if the selection you made was correct.  The learning module ends with a practice skill assessment.

The Assessment is the last link of the medical mathematics instruction and it is an assessment of learning outcomes.  It is followed by survey to evaluate the tutorial.

You can begin the tutorial using the links provided on the left menu of the tutorial page or though a link on the Welcome Page or if you are ready to start the first lesson on conversions click here “Start the Tutorial”.   If you do not know where to start, you could do the self assessment for a particular lesson to identify your individual learning needs for that lesson.  If you achieve an 80% or above then go to the next lesson.  A score of 80% will make the subsequent lesson easier to perform.  A score less than 80% will identify learning needs which need to be mastered in that learning module before progressing to the next module.
