Welcome to the Medical Mathematics Tutorial for Student Nurses.  This tutorial is a web based instructional tool, designed to assist the beginning nursing student to understand the basic mathematic principles related to dosage calculation and measurements.

Goal

This web based medical mathematics tutorial, based on medications and calculations outlined by Kee and Hayes (2003), will assist the student nurse to gain proficiency and accuracy calculating drug dosages from word problems.

Objectives:

1)      At the completion of the conversion learning module and the flash card interactive activity based on Kee and Hayes (2003) conversion guidelines, the student nurse will complete a drill and practice self assessment quiz, where the student will identify the correct conversion mathematical solution from a list of options with at least 80% accuracy.

2)      At the completion of the tools of the trade learning module based on Kee and Hayes (2003), the student nurse will complete a self assessment quiz by appropriately selecting the correct tool to use when presented with a case scenario with at least 80% accuracy.

3)      At the completion of the medical mathematical formula learning module, the student nurse will correctly structure the medical mathematical formula as described by Kee and Hayes (2003) and solve the word problems with at least 80% accuracy.

4)      At the completion of the medical mathematical formula learning module, when given a word problem the student nurse will correctly identify the data directly related to the available drug on hand (H), the drug form (V), the desired dose (D) and the unknown (X) from a word problem with at least 80% accuracy.

5)      At the completion of the tutorial the student nurse will complete a learning assessment which will consist of word problems related to conversions, drug dosage calculations using a formula and identification of tools most appropriate for given medication administration situation with at least 80% accuracy.

Basic Information:

This Tutorial is designed for the beginning student nurse who desires to learn more about medical mathematics and medication dosage calculations.

To navigate through the course use the links provided on the left side bar, the bottom frame or you can use the back or forward button on your browser.

The tutorial  is divided into five main sections

Each lesson module is organized to present a main lesson, then a learning activity, and ends with a self assessment.

Estimated time to complete the tutorial will vary according to your learning needs.  Allow each section at least one hour each.

At the completion of the tutorial, you will be prompted to complete an assessment exercise to evaluate learning outcomes and a brief survey to evaluate the tutorial.

A reference and resource links is provided to help you to further develop your mathematical skills.
